Tūroa is the largest ski area on the North Island of New Zealand, located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, an active volcano. It boasts a wide variety of terrain suitable for all skill levels, from gentle beginner slopes to challenging black diamond runs. The ski area is known for its stunning views, often encompassing Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films). Tūroa offers both natural and man-made snow, extending the ski season as long as conditions allow. Accessing the upper mountain is via the High Noon Express, New Zealand's highest chairlift.
Tūroa is a ski resort in winter but offers stunning hiking trails during the warmer months. The area features volcanic landscapes, offering panoramic views of Mount Ruapehu and the surrounding Tongariro National Park. Popular trails include the Silica Rapids Walk and the challenging climb to the summit of Mount Ruapehu. Check the Department of Conservation website for track conditions and alerts before you go, as volcanic activity can sometimes affect access. Remember to pack appropriate clothing and gear for changeable weather conditions.
